InterBlack Exit was commissioned by BalletCollective for its 2024 season, The Entrance is the Exit. Created by choreographer Houston Thomas as a recipient of BalletCollective’s Developing Choreographers Commission, the work is a collaboration with composer Jonathan Bingham and architect Mario Gooden.
The work reflects a period of personal transition, drawing introspectively on Thomas’s decision to leave his career as a professional dancer and move fully into choreography. Black holes emerged as a shared metaphor among the collaborators—symbolizing thresholds, transformation, and the pull toward the unknown. Inspired by Gooden’s original multimedia project examining entrance and exit in Black cinema, InterBlack Exit moves along the edges of structure and freedom, inviting the audience into a space of uncertainty, release, and becoming.
